چکیده

The nonlinear stability of current-driven ion-acoustic waves in collisionless electron-ion plasmas is analyzed. Seminal simulations from the 80’s are revisited. Accurate numerical treatment shows that subcritical instabilities do not grow from an ensemble of waves, except very close to marginal stability and for large initial amplitudes. Further from marginal stability, one isolated phase-space structure can drive subcritical instabilities by stirring the phase-space in its wake. Phase-space turbulence, which includes many structures, is much more efficient than an ensemble of waves or an isolated hole for driving subcritically particle redistribution, turbulent heating and anomalous resistivity. Phase-space jets are observed in subcritical simulations. PACS numbers: 52.35.Mw,52.35.Sb,52.35.Fp,52.65.Ff,47.27.De,47.27.ek Nonlinear ion-acoustic instability 2

Phase-space holes due to electron and ion beams accelerated by a current-driven potential ramp

One-dimensional open-boundary simulations have been carried out in a current-carrying plasma seeded with a neutral density depression and with no initial electric field. These simulations show the development of a variety of nonlinear localized electric field structures: double layers (unipolar localized fields), fast electron phase-space holes (bipolar fields) moving in the direction of electr...

Onset of fast magnetic reconnection via subcritical bifurcation

We report a phase transition model for the onset of fast magnetic reconnection. By investigating the joint dynamics of streaming instability (i.e., current driven ion acoustic in this paper) and current gradient driven whistler wave prior to the onset of fast reconnection, we show that the nonlinear evolution of current sheet (CS) can be described by a Landau-Ginzburg equation. The phase transi...

Modulational instability of dust ion acoustic waves in astrophysical dusty plasmas with non thermal electrons

Propagation of dust ion acoustic waves in plasmas composed of nonthermal distributed electrons and stationary dust particles is investigated. Nonlinear Schrdinger equation is derived to describe small amplitude waves, using the reduction perturbation technique. Modulation instability of dust ion acoustic waves is analysed for this system. Parametric investigation indicates that growth rate of...

Electron and ion inertia effects on current-driven collisional dust acoustic, dust ion acoustic, and ion acoustic instabilities

Ion acoustic waves can be excited by electrons drifting relative to the ions in a plasma. This relative drift can be produced, in a collisional plasma, by a static electric field. In the analysis of this instability, which occurs for frequencies well below the ion plasma frequency, the electron inertia term in the momentum equation is typically neglected. A similar assumption has been employed ...

Nonlinear compressional electromagnetic ion-cyclotron wavepackets in space plasmas

The parametric coupling between large amplitude magnetic field-aligned circularly polarized electromagnetic ion-cyclotron (EMIC) waves and ponderomotively driven ion-acoustic perturbations in magnetized space plasmas is considered. A cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation for the modulated EMIC wave envelope is derived, and then solved analytically. The modulated EMIC waves are found to be stable...
